Derrick Shelby plays the Defensive End position for the Atlanta
Falcons. As a DE, Shelby understands the role he is responsible for playing
each time he steps out onto the field; a deceptively simple yet key defensive
component crucial to quarterback pressure schemes, pass play disruption and run
tackling both within and outside the box.
Defensive ends, regardless of the level of play (high school,
college or pro), have several important responsibilities, including:
Holding the Running Back in Check
Positioned on the outside of the defensive line, the DE is
generally responsible for ensuring the running play isn’t able to develop
outside of the tackle box.
Disrupting the Passing Game
Getting to the quarterback and swatting down passes is perhaps
among any DE’s favorite thing to do; aside from sacks, of course. Creating
chaos starts and ends by getting to the QB, making Des a crucial part of any
defensive unit.
